He believed only the Pope was allowed to name new bishops (investiture). On the other hand, Henry IV believed this duty fell on him, as king. Pope Gregory VII responded by excommunicating Henry, while also releasing Henry's subjects from feudal obligations to the king. Henry was forced to humilliate himself in a journey through the snowy mountains of Italy to ask for forgiveness, which the Pope granted.

The reason of the conflict was that who among them had the right to appoint church officials. In a Roman council which as headed by Pope Gregory, he declared that the people who have access to any grade of holy orders, or to any office related to it and payment of money will have no rights in regards to officiate any church. This declaration made ruler of Western Europe, 'Henry IV' offended and enraged.
