Freedom of summer was an effort made by civil rights group to register African American voters in the southern part of United States. Freedom of summer is also known as Mississippi summer project. The campaigners gathered around 1000 students from Mississippi University and other colleges and started o campaign demanding equal rights for African American students in terms of voting but the local authorities and police took action against campaigners by charging false charges against them, beating them and even 3 of the campaigners were murdered during this protest. This campaign was coordinated by congress on Radical equality and student non-violence organisation. Three campaigners were badly beaten and their bodies were not found for six weeks. Shocked by these events, the campaigners alleged the involvement of state authorities and slow pace of investigation and because of this, Distrust grew between white and black workers.  The Mississippi campaigners did established fifty freedom schools to carry their community organizing but that also managed to register only twelve hundred African Americans. Finally after all these efforts, their demands were taken care of and voting rights for African American students was added in the voting rights act of 1965.
