The three types of settlements consisted of large cities, small towns, and farming villages. Archaeologists have found three large cities of equal size. They are not identical, but they do have similar characteristics. Massive brick walls surrounded the perimeter of each city, and smaller walls enclosed individual houses. The cities were designed with a grid system of streets that were wide enough for carts. They also contained water and sewage systems, including reservoirs that stored water, toilets that connected to brick-lined sewers, and public baths. This shows that sanitation was important to the Indus civilization.Archaeologists also have discovered smaller towns that were patterned after the large cities. These towns have many of the same features as the cities, but on a much smaller scale. Between the large cities were a number of farming villages. These villages may have provided food to the larger population areas. They appear to be rural communities and were designed much differently than the larger cities and towns.
