so-called primitive Christianity (times of Apostles) was not totally apolitical (there was always politics in the background), but it concentrated on spiritual matters. In 313 Christinity became official state religion (Edict of Milan, Constantine the Great) because the emperor understood that Christianity/religion can be a powerful political weapon ! In contrast to other religions institutionalized Christianity has its official head/pope which is viewed as a God´s/Christ´s minister on Earth so pope became already in early middle ages a God´s agent on Earth, his spirirual power. Popes consecrated representatives of profane/secular power (kings/queens/emperors) and in Middle Ages spiritual and profane power were viewed as as two aspects of the power of God on Earth. These relations became conflituous in 11th century (German emperor Henry IV and Canossa, 1044...here emperor was humiliated). Then we can see only conflicts and rivalry (king Philippe IV Le Bel, Louis the Bavarian, English king Henry VIII etc.).
