The fourteenth amendment was one of the longest amendment to the US constitution. It was ratified in 1868 to safeguard the civil rights of the freed slaves. It was an controversial and important  amendment that addressed issues such as the rights of the citizens, due process, the requirement of the states and equal protection under the law.

The most important section of this amendment was the Equal Protection clause that barred the states from implementing Black Codes. The Black Codes were passed in 1865 and 1866 by the southern states to compel them to work for low wages and restrict their freedom.
