As a result of the French Revolution and Napoleon's subsequent rise to power, Venezuela sought independence when Napoleon invaded Spain and made them weak enough to be fought.

Under Napoleon, France emerged from the French Revolution as a world power that was bent on conquering Europe. Napoleon allied with Spain to invade Portugal but then tried to take over the Spanish crown through an invasion.

The effects of this invasion were that:

Spanish colonies in the Americas saw an opportunity to gain independenceFrench soldiers became tied down in guerilla warfare

As a result of Spain being invaded and her government being disorganized, the revolutionaries in the colonies began planning to wrest control from Spain.

Simon Bolivar came back from Europe and met the independence movement and over subsequent years, became its leader and succeeded in winning independence for Venezuela.

In conclusion, Napoleon made Spain weak enough for the Venezuelan independence movement to succeed.

Napoleon and the French revolution did all the possible to export the revolution (its values, philosophy, political principles and so on). This is true for Europe and for Latin/Hispanic America as well. Napoleon (before becoming emperor) and French revolutionaries overthrew not only European dynasties but also dynastic/hereditary principle on which all the states at that time were founded. In Latin America it was Simón Bolívar who (together with other revolutionaries) attempted to institute republican principle and overthrow Spanish monarchical power structures. At the same time he believed in pan-American ideas. His ideas are still very alive in Hispanic America.
