It was the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania. Maj. Gen. George Pickett led a charge by some 12,500-15,000 men across a field nearly three quarters of a mile long. General Robert E. Lee, chief commander of the Confederate army, had been unsucessfully attacking the flanks of the Union troops. He ordered a full charge against the enemy´s center.
