The 20-minute ride on chairlift number 5 at crystal mountain ski resort gave many skiers pause. although the fancy lift sported a metal bar that could be brought down from overhead on which to rest one's skis, the grueling ride could be mighty cold, as the hill was exposed to the bitter east wind. i should know because for three winters i practically lived on that mountain, and the runs that led down from the top of chair 5 were, hands down, the best. that's the only reason i braved that lift, again and again. just when i thought my legs had frozen to the seat, the top of the mountain would come into sight with its flat top where skiers loved to sun themselves on warmer days. i'd lift the foot rest bar back over my head, grab my poles in one hand, scoot to the edge of the seat, and push off down the ramp, gliding to a perfect stop on the snowy bluff overlooking the slopes. then i'd pick a run to match my mood: a well-trod but scenic run down a wide-open slope or the more challenging path that wove through the trees with as much as 2 feet of fresh powder. there were plenty others to choose from, but these were my favorites—the runs i knew as if they were childhood paths to hidden treasures. 8
