Women experienced great hardships because of the war. Many of them had to work in factories to take over the work that men could no longer do. They also had to take care of businesses, farms, and many other industries where men could no longer be found. Some women also collaborated to the war effort directly, as typists, secretaries and nurses.

However, the war also brought some benefits. For many women, it was the first time they participated in the political and social life of the country. Moreover, women were able to learn new skills, and found a new sense of freedom and purpose.

As women were at the center of the war effort during the first world conflict in all countries, an involvement that helped their emancipation at different rates according to the country.

Many women had to do the work themselves as farms, sometimes even replacing the necessary horses. According to historian Benjamin Ziemann, in 1916 44% of Bavarian farms were run by women. Throughout Europe, as well as women substitute in front of the work of the men in the party, even the least allowed for boys, they become bond drivers, cafeteria waitresses, postal workers, charcoal distributors, bank employees or female school teachers

Women were losing their husbands, they needed money, and the countries could not stop producing.
