Reconstruction is a period of US history between 1865 and 1877 in which attempts were made to solve the problems that arose after the Civil War in which the Confederacy and slavery were defeated. Reconstruction had three stages:

-The presidential reconstruction (1863-1866) was under the direct control of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, and aimed at the rapid reunification of the country. Their moderate programs were in stark contrast to the radical Republicans, a political faction that strengthened after the 1866 election.

-Radical Reconstruction (1866-1873) was a stage of Reconstruction in which the emphasis was placed on the civil and voting rights of freed slaves. The Republican coalition of freed slaves, carpetbegers and southern unionists controlled most of the southern states.  During this phase, the 15th Amendment was passed, which granted voting rights for African Americans.

-The third phase of reconstruction, also called Redemption, lasted between 1873 and 1877, when Southern advocates of white supremacy defeated Republicans in the elections and took control of all southern states, which marked the end of Reconstruction.
