Without this system, a branch of the government can easily gain too much power, and this can lead to many issues. For example, if the judicial branch could not impeach the president, he would be able to get away with anything he really wanted to, which could have serious ramifications. Another example is that if the legislative branch wasn't able to override the president's vetoes, the president could veto anything he disagreed with, making the law according to his opinion.
