It became a federal holiday in 1863 during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. The first thanks giving was celebrated by the Pilgrims of Mayflower ship after their first harvest in the New World and lasted for three days and was attended by ninety native Americans and 53 pilgrims. The first thanksgiving proclamation regarding thanksgiving was issued by George Washington on October 3, 1789. It marked the first national celebration of a holiday which is common in american homes today.
