The technology of warfare after the war makes society slightly better. It took Hiroshima and Nagasaki to make atomic energy a viable source of energy, but at what cost? And even if you accept that atomic energy is a good thing, you have to accept things like Chernobyl.

Here are some other results. Death is always a side effect of war. Many times it is the civilians that pay the damages of war.

Starvation is another side effect. Food is at a premium. People die slow and agonizing deaths. That is not the only kind of death. Cruelty often brings out the worst in people. There was no reason whatever to firebomb Dresden: it had absolutely no military action.

Now it is almost unthinkable to fight the kind of war fought around Stalingrad. Numbers lost on both sides were absolutely horrific and if you want to read a real horror story that makes Dracula seem to be a saint, try reading about Leningrad. It was under siege for more than 900 days. No food or other necessities in. The deaths got to the point where in winter, the dead were left in the streets.
