These colonies provided raw material, troops, and military bases which proved essential in Britain's war effort. However, after the end of war colonies gradually began to get independence from the empire. It was difficult to maintain colonies after the war because of the United States's opposition to imperialism and defeats by Imperial Japan. India which was also known as the British Crown Jewel gained independence in 1947. Malaysia became a free country in 1957.  Ghana got freedom in 1957 and by 1967 more than 20 colonies became independent. The British handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997 marked the end of British empire.

The French empire comprised of colonies in South East Asia, Middle East and Africa. Vietnam, declared independence in 1945. Laos and Cambodia gained independence in 1953. 15 French colonies in Africa got freedom in 1960.

Belgian Congo currently known as the Democratic Republic of Congo became independent in 1960.  Rwanda and Burundi were also under Belgian control which were decolonized in 1962.

Netherland had colonized Indonesia known as Dutch East Indies at the time, the Japanese seized Dutch East Indies in 1942. Indonesia declared independence from Dutch control in 1945.
