Dawson had settled that land at the end of 1860 due to a land grant belonging to Lucien B. Maxwell. The land was in Colfax County, New Mexico. He built a cattle ranch and later he discovered coal deposits. That is when he discovered a coal mine and he sold the land to the Dawson Fuel Company in 1901, and then were passed to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1906. In 1912, the town of Dawson grew because the company built homes to hire new workers and also built a hospital, stores, and a cinema.
