Why did japanese soldiers kill so many civilians in nanking, china?

When the Japanese invaded Manchuria and big portion of the eastern coastline of China, they were brutal toward the Chinese population. The reason why the Japanese were so brutal was not to weaken the Chinese, or that the civilians opposed to them, but instead because they saw them as lower ethnic group that was much more primitive than them, and even as not worthy of living. In many aspects this was very similar to how the Germans treated the Jewish people, just that the Japanese didn't made concentration camps. The Japanese soldiers were ordered to kill, burn, destroy, and violate the women, and so they did, resulting in millions of deaths. Nanking was the city that was the most damaged by this because the Japanese had lot of military personnel stationed there. On top of it all, the Japanese scientists that were developing bio-chemical weapons were allowed to practice them on alive Chinese people, and they did, resulting in terrible and agonizing deaths.
