What they shared between them was that they often treated the native inhabitants very poorly. The explorers were torturing them, killing them, stealing gold and silver from them, using them as slaves. The priests on the other hand were forcing them to accept their religion, and were trying their best to erase their own native religion, often using brutal measures to achieve their goals.
