PC refers to "personal computer," and the term was initially used by the IBM Personal Computer. A personal computer was to be distinguished from an institutional computer which had so far been the only available kind. Personal computers are also different from institutional ones in that the former run on commercial software, as opposed to having to develop their own applications. Microsoft operating systems and Intel hardware have dominated the market since the 1990s.
