after world war ii, the soviet union occupied the northern half of korea and the united states occupied the southern half. unable to agree on how to unify the country, the two superpowers withdrew their forces, leaving two countries—communist north korea and noncommunist south korea. in june 1950, without warning, communist north korea invaded noncommunist south korea with the goal of unifying the two nations under communism. the united nations security council condemned the invasion and authorized the use of force to drive the north koreans out of the south.
