Explanation: Indeed, “Desert Storm” was the military name used for the combat phase of this war. It is also known as the Gulf war and it took place between the United States-led coalition against Sadam Hussein’s Iraq after the latter invaded the Kingdom of Kuwait. The war was won by the American coalition and it was waged between August of 1990 and February of 1991.

The second Gulf war or Iraq war as it is officially known was waged between another American-led “Coalition of the Willing” and Sadam Hussein’s Iraq in 2003 and lasted until 2011. This time, the US had very little international support and many US allies opposed the war since it was justified on false accusations. Sadam Hussein was accused by George W. Bush’s first presidency of manufacturing chemical, nuclear and bacteriological weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and of collaborating with Bin Laden to attack the World Trade Center (September 11th).

Many key US allies rejected such accusations as UN inspections had proven that Sadam no longer had any WMDs. It was proven later that the Bush administration fabricated all the evidence. In any event, the invasion took place. Sadam was defeated and was later imprisoned and hanged by a free Iraqi tribunal. Due to several miscalculations and abuses by the American occupation army, an insurgency developed and Americans had to leave the country in 2011.
