Thirteen years after its construction was completed, The Suez Canal was under British control since 1882. At that time, there was a civil war in Egypt which caused British troops moved in to protect the canal from war. Then, the British government succeeded in having part of the canal because the Egyptian authorities sold it to England because The Civil War made Egypt in a crisis, so they needed money to overcome the crisis they experienced.  

The Suez Canal became very important for Britain because the amount of trade between Britain and India (as a commonwealth) was so high. By going through the canal they saved a lot instead of having to turn to Africa, the ship saved a lot of time - on average two-thirds of the trip.
