Explain how "veiled reporting" may result in underreporting of gay and lesbian subjects in survey research

Actually, I just read a Pew Research article that indicated that "not" using "veiled reporting" may result in under reporting of gay and lesbian subjects. "Veiled reporting" is conducting a study in such a way that answers that respondents provide can not ever be possibly connected back to the person providing the answers. According to the article, traditional anonymous polling methods still give a bias towards not answering as truthfully as the veiled reporting method. The veiled reporting resulted in higher numbers of gay and lesbian in the population than the traditional polling did.
