The E. European countries wanted to break free because many countries did not support communist views, as many of Stalin's targets were democratic countries. Some feared that Stalin had the same goals as Hitler. The Soviet Union extended its political and military influence over Eastern Europe , in a move that was seen by some as a continuation of the older policies of the Russian Empire. Under Soviet rule, many economies collapsed. Eastern European countries had to have the same economic systems as the USSR and they were not allowed to trade with any non-communist countries. It was rules like these that caused unhappiness from Eastern European countries that were under Soviet rule. So, many E. European countries attempted to break free from the Soviet Union.

There were two goals. First, they wanted to spread Communism into Eastern Europe. They wanted the countries of Eastern Europe to have a more communist government that would be allies of the Soviet Union. Second off, they wanted to create a zone of friendly governments to serve as defense against Germany or any other Western Power.

Now, of course, Europe was ripe for communist ideas. To strengthen democratic governments, the United States had offered an aiding package, however, Stalin refused and forbade Eastern Europe countries from accepting any form of United States aiding.

Eastern Europe wanted to so desperately break free of the Soviet Union to gain their independence. They demanded freedom and resented Russian rule. People took to the streets to demand reform. Eastern Europe  often challenged the Soviet authority. Eastern Europe sought economic reforms.
