Born as Isabella Baumfree, Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797 in Ulster County, New York. She was one of thirteen children. Sojourner Truth has been adopted as a powerful symbol for both feminists and African-Americans over the years.  Contemporary critics have lauded Truth’s speaking abilities, placing her among some of the most polished religious and civic speakers of her time.
