In this unit, you read about transitions of power and the formation of newly independent nations in africa, asia, the americas, and the middle east. some of these transitions were peaceful, while others caused long-term instability. why do you think some countries were more successful than others with political transitions? what do you think were the biggest challenges facing newly independent countries? would it have been possible for leaders to prevent these problems before they happened? why or why not?

While Brazil maintained its territorial integrity after independence, the former Spanish America split into more than a dozen separate countries, following the administrative divisions of the colonial system. The difficulty for the inhabitants of these units was not, however, as simple as the demarcation of geographic boundaries. Rather, the recently emancipated countries of Latin America faced the much more daunting challenge of defining and consolidating new nations. With the structures of the old system removed, the inhabitants of each country set out on programs to create a postcolonial political, economic, and social order. The obstacles confronting them were myriad and imposing. As Bolívar himself exclaimed in a final cry of despair, “America is ungovernable for us…; he who serves a revolution ploughs the sea.” Indeed, it was only toward 1850, at the end of a 25-year period sometimes known as “the long wait,” that the outlines of that new order began to take their definitive form across the region.

1. yes it was the new deal introduced lots of regulations to workers, such as the national labour relations act of 1935 which workers to form unions and protected the members from other laws as well as forcing businesses to listen to the unions and their workers

2.the new deal had a lot of great ideas. but when fdr created the national industrial recovery act. they set prizes and work hours for the workers. the workers made more money ($.40 rather than $.20) but because they did not work as much they would end up making less money. after a while the supreme court found this act to be un-constitutional. but sense the people weren’t   making as much money they could not afford the products. even though the new deal was taken away in 1939 because the government became to powerful, there are still remnants of it in our government. national labor relations, social security, etc… the new deal alone did not end the depression but it the u.s.a dramatically and set them on the right track to recover and become the powerhouse of a country it is today.

3. yes it did bring some relief to those who were willing and able to work and it assisted in terms of creating new and strengthening existing infrastructure.
