William Mckinley’s view of Americas entry into the Spanish-American war was different in that The United States, before entering into the war, should have the traditional guiding principle of non-intervention. “We want no wars of conquest; we must avoid the temptation of territorial aggression.” Nevertheless, Mckenley’s view point changed because of the sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana’s harbor in February 1898. For this reason, Mckenley asked Congress to let the U.S. intervene in the war and a formal declaration came on April 25.  Carl Schurz's view of America entry into the Spanish-American war was very different. He thought that the idea of American Imperialism consisted more of high-sound catch-words that tried to convince citizens to enter into the war. He believed that Americans at that time, were convinced the United States had to become a world power, in the sense that their nation had to conquest to be a real world power. Schurz thought that the U.S. was already a world power, but in a different sense, a world power whose opinion was strong and had to be listened. It was not necessary that the U.S. “had its finger in every pie”.
