When he wrote his diary, during the winter of 1777-1778, with his experiences and observations, the American troops had suffered several setbacks, and, after having been defeated at Philadelphia, Washington decided to establish an improvised camp at the strategic, yet extremely harsh, location of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. It is thanks to Dr. Waldo's invaluable notes that it is possible to have a better idea of the difficulties that the American soldiers experienced during those terrible months.
