The building and completion of the Transcontinental railroad played a major role in American's Industrial era.

The United States were gradually expanding Southwards and towards the Pacific ocean. However, due to the vast distances and natural obstacles, the newly formed towns remained small and their economic contribution towards the union was minimal.

The real power and population remained in the rich North-West. However, with the opening of the Transcontinental railroads, people could travel easily to far-flung areas of the country.

More importantly, it was now easier to trade goods and supplies helping to usher in the development of major new cities and an industrial boom that completely transformed America.
