The flagellants

flagellants were members of  organization  which practiced public whipping as a form of penancefinally, the processions of flagellants were banned in 1349. by pope clement vi in the bull "inter sollicitudines" under threat of anathema. as a result, part of the flagellants surrendered to the authorities, and some "went underground" transformed into a heretical sect.
