How did the ghana empire become wealthy through trade?

With gold and salt being transported and traded through Ghana, the Kingdom of Ghana was able to become very wealthy by taxing the goods that came through the trade center. Other materials that were popular within trading in Ghana were ivory, slaves, horses, swords, spices, silks, and even books from Europeans.

The Ghana Empire was very rich. It made its wealth from the mining of gold and salt. Most of the salt mines were north and east of the Ghana Empire. The gold mines were farther south, along the coast. The people of coastal West Africa were more than happy to trade their gold for table salt. The empire controlled the trade routes between the Sahara Desert and the southern parts of West Africa. The Ghana Empire and the rest of West African became known as the Gold Coast. The Trans-Sahara Trade Route was established. Many merchants came to Ghana to trade a variety of goods, including silks, spices, and perfumes, as well as salt, for African gold.
