What was a defining feature of most farm women's experiences on the great plains?

Non native women who farmed the Plains supplied labor or management abilities for field crops as well as a small secure income from barnyard and garden excesses of income. This shows is that one of the main features of most farm women´s experiences was that they could do the men's work because the traditional gender roles were more fluid, this led into many women joining their husbands in the fields while some others remained at home by themselves.

Women cultivated, planted, threw wheat packages, dug up sugar beets, made hay, and dragged rocks out of the fields. Some women liked better fieldwork to housework, they were empowered as they could perform works that were mainly for men; but others were glad to have their children incorporated in the fields so that they could return and remain at home.
