Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), the 26th President of the United States between 1901 and 1908, was born in New York City. His childhood was shaped by his weak health, as he suferred from asthma and frequently had severe attacks. Due to his poor conditions he was schooled at home. In contrast, he was a very energetic and inquisitive person with a brilliant mind, and his challenge consisted on overcoming physical the barriers set by his poor health.

His father influenced him very deeply. His father was involved in main NY cultural affairs, and he had been an activitist for the Union during the Civil War.
