What approach would a military historian take to study the cuban missle crisis

The approach that a military historian would take to study the missile crisis in Cuba would depend from a Soviet or American perspective; both would, anyway, study it fom the strategy point of view; in this sense the "Areas of Influence" doctrine was  strenghtened  .
