Why slavery expanded in the south rather than the north before the civil war

Because the Geographic conditions in the south encouraged the development of large plantations.

There was more plantations that were in the south than the north, there was also more immigrants in the north taking all the jobs. The slave trade was also more towards the south, closer to Cuba where all the sugar plantations were as well.
