Robert Clive was a British Army officer who is known for having established the political and economical supremacy of Great Britain in India while operating under the British East India Company. This institution would remain as political operator of India until 1857, when the Governement of India Act made India an official colony that was under the rule of the British Crown, in other words, Queen Victoria.

The revolt started on 10th May 1857 in the company’s troop of Meerut and then erupted in the other parts of India like in central India and upper Gangetic plains. Mangal Pandey was the first victim of the revolt. The rebellions were able to pose a considerable threat to British power. The reasons behind the revolt can be taken as the introduction of British Style social reform, inequality in the society and harsh and heavy taxes imposed.
