The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement centered on scientific ideas and reasoning. The ideas spread to much of western Europe but were of particular interest in France.

The wealthy and learned in the colonies were able to discuss Enlightenment ideas in France, England, and in the cities of the colonies. These ideas were studied by those able to afford schooling which were the middle and upper classes. The middle and upper classes would have the means and ability to rally behind the ideas of the Enlightenment to create the ideas of the Patriots and Founding Fathers. These were the only men able to leave their land and trust they would continue their economic stability so they could plan a revolution and a new government framed on the ideas of the Enlightenment.
