Well the Catholic church was there to convert them to there faith and D. shunned rumors of gold because now that the Catholics were around they wanted technically to convert them just so no other religion would come over and start looking .They didn't want to share their wealth they want to be wealthy by looking for gold or what the Indians wore because most of there jewel was made out of gold or turqoise (precious stone).
