1. After the Civil War, the economic change had the most severe impact on Southern life. Before the Civil War, plantation owners relied on free labor from slaves in order to make profits. When rejoining the Union after the Civil War, these plantation owners could no longer have slaves. They either had to pay their workers or lease plots of their land (in a system called sharecropping) so that people would work for them. This reduced the amount of money plantation owners were able to make.

2. Social changes were the most difficult type of change in the South. This is because many people felt that newly freed slaves were still inferior to white citizens. Along with this, white citizens tried to stop African-Americans from using the rights given to them in the US Constitution.

3. The 15th amendment gave African-American men over the age of 21 the right to vote. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. 26th amendment gives 18 year old citizens the right to vote.
