The Opium Wars forced China to expand ports for trade. Following the first Opium War, which ended in 1842, five new Chinese treaty ports at Guangzhou (Canton), Shanghai, Xiamen (Amoy), Ningbo, and Fuzhou, where British merchants and their families could reside were opened. A huge indemnity (compensation) was to be paid to the British government and merchants also follwoing the first War. Following the second War(1856–1860) 11 more treaty ports were opened.

At the end of the second War the British and French captured Beijing.

The Chinese defeat in the two wars forced the government to tolerate the opium trade. The British coerced the Chinese to sign the Unequal Treaties, opening several ports to foreign trade and annexing Hong Kong. In addition, the Chinese were forced to pay a compensation to the United Kingdom for 700,000 pounds of silver.
