The answer is the right to vote. He was a wealthy free man of color who wanted the National Assembly to grant free men of color the right to vote.  This was inspired by the French Revolution and he believed that if given the right to vote, they would be more loyal to France.  He would later lead a revolt that resulted into the Haitian Revolution.
