Which is a primary goal of debates?

Debates are formal arguments about a topic, particularly in public forums such as Parliaments. Debates are often held to deliberate on new legislation and laws, as part of debating societies, or, notably in the US, between candidates elected to run for office. Leaders debates of this type have a primary goal of influencing voters to vote for them.
