It receives an integrate signals from the spinal cord and sends resulting impulses to cerebrum and cerebellum.It contains different centers that regulate heart rate , blood pressure , breathing , swallowing , salivation , sneezing , vomiting , coughing and some other involuntary activities.

It acts as the main centre for reflex actions.It acts as a link between spinal nerves and brain. Thus , it participates in conscious actions.
