Effect on school performance: the students grades may drop, they will have poor attendance, and may act out more in class. alcoholism could cause more problems with the student resulting in depression and suicidal thoughts. 

how to help: the students may was to go see the school counselor, a professional outside the school, or even call the drug and alcohol hotline. if the students addiction is severe enough they might need to go to a treatment center for further help.
