3. Carefully read the following sentences, as they apply to the bioenergetics occurring in an athlete’s leg muscles during the first 3 minutes of the race. Highlight the word or words in the sentences that are incorrect. Write the correct word or words in the space under each sentence. Clearly indicate which word or words are being replaced with your suggestions. Carrie is standing at the starting line awaiting the starter’s gun to begin the Indianapolis Half Marathon. In the

initial 5 seconds, as she begins to accelerate to race pace, the four energy systems begin to respond to the increased
need for energy. The immediate ATP needs are met initially by the muscle’s existing stores of ATP and lactic acid,
which constitute what is known as the muscle cell’s anaerobic energy system. Almost as quickly, the phosphagen
energy system begins metabolizing fats for energy, and starts to contribute toward the increased need for ATP. About
2 minutes into the race, the aerobic energy system has had time to ramp up its production of creatine phosphate
and begins to produce all of the energy Carrie’s muscles need. Fats and proteins are the primary macronutrients
metabolized by the aerobic energy system during the race. The other three energy systems back off and play only a
minor role in supporting the needed ATP from then on
