Cholesterol, the body fat, synthesized in the liver from dietary sources, is carried all over the body by the lipoproteins - low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL).  

LDL: Ratio of cholesterol is higher than the protein component, forms plaques on the blood vessel wall leading to atherosclerosis.

HDL: Ratio of protein is higher than cholesterol; carrier of other cholesterol in the body to the liver and later removed from the body

Based on the ratio of protein is to fat in the lipoprotein and its function, the cholesterol is named as bad or good cholesterol.  

Hence HDL which helps to eliminate cholesterol is the good cholesterol and required more by the body. In the lipid profile, a high HDL, low LDL and a low ratio of LDL to HDL should be maintained.
