A group of the cartilage cells are present at end of long bones of infants or adolescents which is known as Epiphyseal plate or growth plate. This cartilage produces new chondrocytes or cartilage cells. As the new chondrocytes are produced the old chondrocytes are pushed back. When the older chondrocytes degenerate they are replaced by the bone cells by a type of cells called osteoblasts.

During puberty, there is an increase in estrogen hormone in both the females and males which leads to increased cell death of the chondrocytes in the epiphyseal plate.

Due to the depletion of these chondrocytes, the growth of the bone stops in length and the entire cartilage is changed by the bone this process is called epiphyseal plate closure and only a scar is left which is known as epiphyseal line or epiphyseal remnant which represents of termination of longitudinal growth of bone.
