Why is empathy important when talking with a suicidal person?

Suicidal people often are out of touch with other people who have, in general, either failed to help them or have actively contributed to the problems which eventually have caused these people to give up on life. They do not need yet another person who doesn't understand or care about them to tell them not to kill themselves. They need understanding.
