The nautilus is a pelagic marine mollusc (land inhabitants known as snails are molluscs as well) of the cephalopod family Nautilidae. These soft-bodied creatures live inside an intricately chambered shell. The "tentacles" of the nautili are actually cirri , composed of long, soft, flexible appendages which are retractable into corresponding hardened sheaths. Nautiluses reproduce by laying eggs. They have a seemingly simple brain, not the large complex brains of octopus, cuttlefish and squid, and had long been assumed to lack intelligence. Nautiluses are scavengers and opportunistic predators.
