However our fishing stocks have decreased by 90% between 1950 and 2011. In addition, certain commonly used fishing practices cause horrendous damage to the rest of ocean ecosystems. A study in 2006 estimated that, if fishing continues at the current rate, all the world's fisheries will have collapsed by the year 2048.
