Edwin Hubble knew all about standard candles and red shift. He used the amount of red shift in known standard candles to determine their (two words - noun).
He then used the distance of standard candles to calculate their (two words - noun).
After he plotted the standard candles' distances vs their redshift, he realized that the Universe is (one word - verb), which was a huge surprise to everyone, including himself and Einstein.
